So you have read about the new Nikon D4 and seen the six THOUSAND dollar price. Here is an alternative.
Last year I bought a D7000 and no longer use the D200. It has less than 25,000 shutter actuations and is in great shape.

Price: $500 includes strap, battery and a couple of CF cards and Ken Rockwell's user's guide. No original packaging. I have obviously gone through the menu and the camera is set up to shoot, optimized.

This is one in a series of photos I took to submit for a new book. They chose a different shot but I like this one best. The Lower Laguna Madre is one of the locations profiled in the new book "Fifty More Places to Fly Fish Before You Die", a sequel to the original. It would make a nice Christmas gift for a fishing friend so check it out, (here), and let me know what you think of the photo they chose to use.

Thanks to Johnny Quiroz for being the casting model. This was shot last winter and it was colder than the photo would suggest. It was his idea to get out of the boat, and it worked.

There is nothing more enjoyable than flyfishing on a skiff with someone that can put an 80 to 100 foot cast right on the spot. The fish don't even realize you're in the same zip code. As I spotted fish and began to put the boat in position, John Pilmer would already be starting his cast. That would remind me that I didn't need to ease the boat into the zone that has a good chance of spooking the fish. John could close the distance.

I've been posting on Salty Shores this week and I am contemplating migrating blog entries exclusively to Salty Shores. Sam Root has revamped the site and it looks great. There is far more and diverse content with something posted almost daily and many days there are multiple posts. You should check it out if you are already not a regular.

A Break from the Wind

South Texas, and particularly the Lower Laguna Madre, has been in the grips of a persistent, howling wind for weeks. Then, yesterday, it went flat calm and for some unknown reason the water exited the bay and took us to low water levels we usually only see in winter and July. I caught a ride on Capt. Rick Hartman's boat along with Tony Kirk for a morning that happens only a handful of times a year. We were surrounded by large groups of tailing redfish and they were hungry.

At exactly 9:45, the mullet disappeared, the tailing stopped and it was over.

I took a few clips from a previous video and applied slow motion. The original clips were recorded in 720p at 60 frames per second which gives a smooth slow motion effect. If you view at full HD and full screen you can clearly watch the red fish come up and out of the water to take the fly.

Sorry about the nasty background, but I couldn't get this female Cardinal to cooperate and sit on an isolated stick.
This shot, and the previous post photo was made using the new Nikon D7000 I just received a couple of weeks ago. The image quality is great on this camera but it is physically smaller than what I am used to using and my big hands are having a little trouble dealing with it. This will replace the D200 I have been using and when Nikon ever gets a full frame to compete with the Canon 5DMkII, I may make the jump. I came close to getting the D700 which is a nice full frame camera but not the level of the Canon and cost nearly the same. Come on Nikon!

They are pretty low in the food chain. This guy was impaled on a barbed wire fence by a Loggerhead Shrike, a bird that is sometimes confused with the Texas state bird, the Mockingbird. The Loggerhead Shrike is known for catching prey, usually insects and even lizards, then sticking them on something sharp for consumption later.

A day or two after a front moves through south Texas usually results in great sunsets. This was taken with a Nikon D200, Tokina 11-16mm @ 14mm, f16, 1/50s at ISO 100 using a tripod. I metered a spot in the sky just out of the suns glare to get the proper exposure.

The weather was perfect and the red fish were cooperative. Even though the water of the Lower Laguna Madre was a bit stained, we found fish in water so shallow they could not hide. It seemed the bite improved as the day wore on.
